Elizabethton honoring historic black baseball team
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) – The eastern Tennessee city of Elizabethton is preparing to dedicate a historical marker to the Blue Grays, a semiprofessional baseball team made up of local black men who defeated some of the top black teams in the South in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/29ZkBn8 ) reports that a celebration will take place Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Blue Grays Field to honor the team. A state historical marker next to the field will be dedicated during a ceremony.
The field, which had been the team’s home, was renamed by city park officials in 2014.
The Blue Grays players were from the Tri-Cities region that includes the cities of Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol.
