“Unity in the Community” meeting draws hundreds to pray for country
MILAN, Tenn. –Hundreds of people gathered Friday night spanning racial and gender barriers to pray for their city, community, and country.
Milan residents hosted their first “Unity in the Community” event at the Milan City Park. Organizers of the event said they felt in light of recent tragedies across the nation, they need to stand together to show unity in the community.
“Just along with things that are going on in the world, I thought it was just time I mean you can just sit back and just be upset about it or try to come up with some kind of solution, but the basis of everything is getting back to God,” organizer Ryan Ivory said.
A few Milan residents worked for six days to put together their first meeting, a time of prayer, fellowship, and love.
“The more people know each other the better they communicate with each other and it makes it a lot easier for problem solving,” Milan Police Chief Bobby Sellers said.
One purpose of the event was to break down barriers like race, gender, and beliefs to come back to what is most important.
“God said we are all created in his image, He didn’t say what color so we all look like him, we are all apart of him and I just want to get people together and we just get back to focusing on God,” Ivory said.
Organizers say they hope to continue having meetings like this one, maybe three times a year.
