Paramedics react to dangerous ambulance crash

JACKSON, Tenn. — A vehicle was forced on its side Thursday night after being hit by an ambulance en route to an emergency call, but these types of crashes come as no surprise to paramedics.

accident responseWith 20 years of experience in emergency services, Joyce Noles said technology has brought new risks to the job.

“A lot of it is with the new technology. Cars are more soundproof, everybody has a great radio system, cell phones and all of that. We do see a lot more distracted drivers, and we just try to be more alert,” Noles said.

EMS drivers said patients in ambulances are the safest in the vehicle. The bed is bolted to the floor and the patient is strapped on the cot, but they’re also trying to make it safely to their destination.

“If you know it’s a bad road or a bad curve, don’t stop on hills and try to have us pass you on a hill. Don’t stop in a curve, take the time to get off the road safely for yourself, and that makes more safety for us, too,” Noles said.

The rule is to get as far right as you can on the road. Although seconds count, Noles said they will let you get out of the way.

“We may be behind you with lights and sirens, but we’re going to be patient enough to let you get to a safe spot so you’re not endangering yourself or us,” Noles said.

None of the individuals involved in Thursday night’s crash was critically injured.
