Restraining order granted to Bethel University to block state action
McKENZIE, Tenn. — Bethel University has been granted a restraining order halting administrative action by the Tennessee Education Department and State Board of Education after a July vote to revoke Bethel’s approval and accreditation to prepare college students to take Tennessee’s teacher licensure test, according to a release from the university.
The State of Tennessee Chancery Court for Davidson County issued the restraining order Wednesday in a lawsuit filed on behalf of Bethel University against the State of Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee Board of Education and others, including State Commissioner of Education Candace McQueen, according to the release.
The court order restrains and prohibits the defendants in the lawsuit from enforcing or assisting in enforcing any aspect of the State Board of Education’s decision regarding Bethel’s School of Education made by the board at its July 22 meeting, according to the release.
