Giving back to others

JACKSON, Tenn — In 2000, Phylis Anyango participated in the Australia Olympic Games. What she’s done since then, is the story.

After her experience playing in the games for her country Kenya, Anyango moved to the United States on a volleyball scholarship to Lee College in Texas. There she would play two years, before she wound up at Union University where she graduated. Anyango decided to stay in Jackson and give back to the community, because she knows back home, a helping hand is hard to come by. In her free time, Anyango referee’s volleyball and directs and coaches the Jackson Juniors travel volleyball team. Although it can be a busy schedule, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

“To me it’s about giving back to the community, giving back because being from Kenya, we’re not very well,” Anyango said.  “Everything is not as good as it is, so coming up here, and seeing the sport I just wanted to develop more and give back to the kids.”

Right now her travel team is in it’s off season due to the high school season, but will resume following the high school season. Anyango said she has put everyone of her players, but two in a college volleyball program if they wanted too.
