Man charged in deadly shooting appears in court
JACKSON, Tenn. — After a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in west Jackson, one of two men facing murder charges appeared Thursday in Jackson City Court.
Cedric Evans is charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in court Thursday for his preliminary hearing.
Evans, along with Cornelius Jones, is accused of gunning down Mondarrius Miller at the Villages at Old Hickory apartments back in January. One witness who chose not to be identified couldn’t see any faces the night of the shooting but says there were two men running toward a gray Chevy Impala after the shots had been fired.
Aaron Chaplin with the district attorney’s office called city of Jackson crime scene analyst, Aimee Oxley, to the stand. She was one of the investigators who worked the scene the night of the shooting.
“I found several pairs of gloves and some clothing and a Glock firearm,” Oxley said.
Oxley said she found a hat stuck in the hoodie portion of a sweatshirt and a glove stuck in the sleeve underneath the passenger front seat of a Chevy Impala.
“When I pulled that item out from underneath the seat, there was also a Glock firearm wrapped in that sweatshirt,” Oxley said.
After the items were collected they were sent to the TBI for DNA testing. When the results came back, Oxley said multiple items from the Chevy Impala were linked to Cedric Evans.
“A Glock .45 pistol matched had DNA consistent with Cedric Evans. The magazine to that firearm also had a DNA profile that was consistent with Cedric Evans,” Oxley said.
According to Oxley, the hoodie sweatshirt, the glove and the hat the firearm was wrapped in came back a positive match for the DNA of Evans. She also said all the shell casings found at the scene matched the Glock .45.
Evans remains in jail with no bond. His case is set to go before the grand jury on Nov. 7.
