Haywood Co. commissioners again tackle issue of approving a new budget

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.-Once again it was back to drawing board for the Haywood County Commission who has yet to pass a budget for the current fiscal year.

The commission met for a couple of hours, Thursday night again looking for ways to either make cuts or raise taxes.
The budget committee proposed a 20 cent property tax increase, down from 30 cents, proposed earlier this week. But commissioners would not entertain the thought.

The county’s mayor told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News it has been a difficult week for everyone.

“It’s worse than a rock and a hard place. We’re getting into dangerous territory, where if we don’t get a budget passes, tax notices won’t go out, the board of education won’t get their funding from the state and these folks act like they don’t care, I mean, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Haywood County Mayor Franklin Smith.

Mayor Smith said he is looking at whether he can legally call a special commission meeting before next month’s regular meeting.
Without a budget, Haywood County will begin losing state funds October 1.
