Emergency responders converge near downtown Jackson for hazmat drill

JACKSON, Tenn.-If you happened to be near downtown Jackson, Wednesday night and saw a large presence of first responders..
don’t worry, it was just a drill.

The agencies converged on State Street between Airways Boulevard and the 45 Bypass for a hazmat drill involving a simulated chlorine spill.
The Jackson Fire Department says conducting these types of exercises helps crews prepare for emergencies that could happen at anytime.

“These drills are very important for us to prepare for any situation that occurs. And we’re holding this nighttime drill here because you never can tell when a situation is going to occur. It could be daytime, it could be nighttime, it could be the holidays or on weekends,” said Fire Marshal Lamar Childress of the Jackson Fire Department.

The drill lasted for several hours with more than 30 people from various agencies participating.
