JPD hosts second 5K Andy Bailey memorial run
JACKSON, Tenn — In 2004, Sgt. Andy Bailey, a 30 yr veteran of the Jackson police department, lost his life in the life of duty.
The police department continues to remember his life and legacy by hosting a 5K memorial run in his honor. One retired officer said he worked with Sgt. Bailey for several years.
“It’s just a good memory of Andy. I worked with Andy for about 15 years we all loved Andy and we all enjoyed working with him.” Retired officer, Mike Landreth said.
Organizers said events like the memorial run provide a chance to interact with community members.
Event coordinator Sharon Massey said “anything that we can do where we can interject ourselves into the public and give back it comes full circle.”
JPD officials and participants gathered for a moment of prayer before taking off for the run. Despite Saturday’s rain organizers said they wouldn’t let a little the weather stop their shine. Massey said even though it rained two years in a row she’s proud to have a great turnout.
“It is amazing to know whenever you have one and it’s successful and you have another one.. It’s humbling to know that I put this stuff together and we have the turnout. It’s amazing.” Massey said.
All the proceeds are going back into the community.
Massey explained,”the funds go to the Jackson police department community fund that’s something that I created with the west Tennessee healthcare foundation.”
Each runner paid a $20 registration fee.
