Madison County leaders hold monthly commission meeting

JACKSON, Tenn. — Madison County leaders met Monday to discuss topics ranging from new positions, repairs and helping a local scout.

Screen Shot 2016-09-19 at 12.54.44 PMFor nearly two months, the Madison County historian position has been vacant after Linda Higgins resigned in July. The seat was filled Monday by someone who held the position before for 23 years — Halbert Alexander.

“I want to make sure that we preserve and present our history,” Alexander said. “It’s a wonderful thing for our young people to know who came before them and why we’re here.”

Highway Superintendent Bart Walls informed members that TDOT awarded communities throughout the state, including Madison County, with $250,000 toward highway safety improvement.

“Those improvements consist of striping signage, reflective markers along the center line of the roads and things like that,” Walls said.

Also, an Eagle Scout was granted approval to build an arch in front of the county courthouse.

“The young man made a great presentation,” Chairman Gary Deaton said. “We hear a lot of bad things about young people, but I mean he’s an example of there’s a lot of good young people in this county.”

The next County Commission meeting is set for Monday, Oct. 17.
