Man found guilty in attempted murder of ex-girlfriend
JACKSON, Tenn — A family is breathing a sigh of relief.
Tuesday, Michael Stitts was found guilty of four charges by a Madison County jury. The counts include attempted murder, aggravated burglary, employing a weapon during a dangerous felony and a felon in possession of a firearm.
Stitts admitted to going a home on Highview Street armed with a 28-gauge shotgun to “take care” of ex-girlfriend Mary Ann Greer’s current boyfriend.
Officers say Stitts admitted to firing at the the front door after he knocked without getting an answer. He then removed an air conditioning unit from a window to get inside the home.
Police say once inside, Stitt fired a round through the bathroom door and struggled with Greer. He then shot her once again before taking off.
Greer was in ICU and lost an arm because of her injuries.
Monday, she testified in the case. Tuesday, she sat in the courtroom as the verdict was read.
Greer’s daughter-in-law said it was a nerve-racking process. “We’re just ready for all of this to end. But at the end of the day, we are happy. We are pleased and we’re glad it’s over,” Brittany Buckley said.
Buckley said it’s a day the family is glad to see.
“It’s been hard. [My mother-in-law] is a very strong woman and she has made it easier for all of us.” Buckley said.
She says Greer isn’t slowing down one bit.
“Just her getting up walking around, everyday going. She’s strong and it helps us.”
Stitts is scheduled to be sentenced on November 21. He will remain in the Madison County Jail without bond until then.
