Man in Memphis hospital after being shot by Gibson Co. deputy
GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A deputy-involved shooting Thursday morning in Gibson County has sent a Humboldt man to a Memphis hospital.
Gibson County deputies and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are still investigating the shooting.
According to the TBI, deputies responded to the 200 block of Pleasant Hill Road around 10:30 a.m. after a woman said she saw a suspicious man walking in the road in front of her house with a rifle.
“Lady that lives at this house saw someone in her backyard or around her property that she thought was armed with a weapon,” Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas said.
According to the TBI, the man was Robert Solberg, 32, of Humboldt. The TBI also confirmed Solberg lived right across the street from where the shooting took place.
“Once they got out here they did encounter a subject that had a gun, and it led to one of my deputies discharging his weapon,” Thomas said.
After being shot, Solberg was airlifted to a trauma unit in Memphis. His condition is unknown, but authorities say he is still alive. According to Sheriff Thomas, the gun found at the scene belonged to Solberg.
The deputy involved was not injured.
“Officers are trained when you encounter a threat to eliminate the threat, and luckily in this situation the threat was eliminated and nobody has died,” Sheriff Thomas said.
The name of the woman who called the police has not been released, but Sheriff Thomas said she was not harmed, just a little shaken up.
“She’s doing OK. I did speak to her, and she is appreciative of the deputies’ quick response out here, the way they handled the situation,” Thomas said.
Sheriff Thomas said this is still an active investigation and that the TBI will be the lead agency.
