Update: TBI identifies man shot by deputy in Gibson County
GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the man who was shot Thursday morning by a Gibson County deputy.
Robert Solberg, 32, was shot by a deputy after a woman called saying he was walking with a rifle in front of her home, according to the TBI.
The TBI has also confirmed that Solberg lived across the street from the home where the shooting took place.
According to an update from the TBI, their preliminary investigation indicates a woman reported a suspicious man walking in the road while carrying a rifle around 10:30 a.m. in front of her home in the 200 block of Pleasant Hill Road just east of Humboldt.
The woman called a second time a few minutes later and said the man was behind the garage of her home with the weapon.
A short time later, two deputies with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the home and encountered the man, later identified as Solberg.
During the interaction, one deputy fired, striking Solberg, according to the TBI. A weapon believed to be Solberg’s was recovered at the scene.
Solberg was airlifted to Memphis. No other injuries have been reported.
The TBI has agents and forensic scientists on scene to gather evidence.
“As a reminder, the TBI acts as ‘fact-finders’ in its investigations,” the TBI release states. “The determination as to whether the deputy’s actions were justified rests solely with the District Attorney General.”
