Madison County Fire Department hits the streets to install smoke alarms

“You welcome them in your front door and turn them loose,” said homeowner Connie Mullins.

Wednesday, the Madison County Fire Department hit the streets to save lives and install free smoke alarms in the community.

“Every time we put one in we feel like it’s the first time,” said Madison County Fire Marshal Don Friddle.

Friddle said this year the county has installed more than 950 alarms and Wednesday they continued the fight.

“We’re going to be knocking door to door seeing if people need smoke alarms and if they don’t have smoke alarms then we are going to offer to put them up for free for them,” said Friddle.

He said the alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than 50 percent and saving lives before the fire is what these heroes are all about.

“One of the best things a fire department can do for its community is to give them the life saving device and to put it into their home and install it for them,” Friddle said.

“They get it done in just a very few minutes, they ask you a couple of questions and they’re gone,” Connie Mullins said.

42 years ago, Mullins and her husband moved into their home and now they want to do everything to be safe and protect their memories.

“You can’t replace your home, all the memories we’ve made here raising our children and now we have grandchildren here with us, there’s just no place like home.” Mullins said.

An appreciation she cannot keep from talking about.

“I really appreciated that and we’ve tried to spread the word so that everybody in our community takes advantage of it,” said Mullins.
