Two arrested after shooting leads Gibson Co. officers on high-speed chase
DYER, Tenn. — The Gibson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting Wednesday morning that led officers on a high speed chase through the county.
“I can’t count the number of times actually I heard it go off,” Mindy C., a neighbor who heard the gunshots said. “It was quite a few.”
Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Gibson County Sheriff deputies and Dyer Police responded to a shots fired call on Walnut St. in Dyer. According to the Gibson Co. Sheriff three shots were fired but no one was injured.
Neighbors say two cars were parked in the middle of the street before the people inside began arguing. They heard gunshots and both cars sped off.
“They seemed really mad at each other, you never see things like that coming,” Mindy said. “We wasn’t really expecting other people to be outside of our house shooting.”
Sheriff Paul Thomas was heading to the scene when he spotted the alleged shooters car, which started the chase.
“They refused to stop, it was two black males driving a car,” Gibson Co. Sheriff Paul Thomas said. “It was a pursuit that lead us through the city limits of Trenton; Trenton police department assisted us.”
According to the sheriff, that chase ended in Trenton near the intersection of 10th and Lexington St. when officers forced the suspects car into a ditch after they would not stop.
“At least two or three deputies right behind me, and then Trenton officers got involved as well,” Sheriff Thomas said. “When they went in the ditch and finally stopped, there was seven to eight officers there immediately. So everybody was right there on top of it.”
The sheriff says they recovered a gun and drugs from the car and both men were arrested. For neighbors, this shooting was unexpected and too close to home.
“It’s kind of scary,” Mindy said. “I’ve got two young kids, so I don’t really want them living in an environment like that.”
The sheriff’s office did question the individuals who were targeted during the shooting, but right now deputies say there aren’t any clear answers as to what prompted the violence. The Gibson County Sheriffs office is still looking into a possible motive. The names of the two men in custody have yet to be released.
