Brownsville residents take a stand against domestic violence

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Throughout the month of October, people across the country are taking a stand against domestic violence. As this month brings awareness to the epidemic, residents of Brownsville partnered with the Wo/men’s Rape and Resource Assistance Program.

Screen Shot 2016-10-20 at 5.19.08 PM“To embrace and empower adult and child survivors of domestic and sexual assault,” WRAP Advocate Lartyania Merriweather-Taylor said.

WRAP supporters gathered Thursday to remember those who’ve lost their lives to domestic violence as well as survivors.  An issue Brownsville Police are working to combat.

“It’s something that we take a very strong stance on at the police department,” Brownsville Police Chief Barry Diebold said. “Unfortunately about 1 of every 5 calls that we get in Brownsville is domestic related.”

“Here in Haywood County we have way too many domestic violence cases,” Brownsville Mayor William Rawls said. “We will work tirelessly with the police department, the community, the faith based community to squall the violence.”

During a passionate poem, a survivor turned WRAP volunteer had some encouraging words for others who may be dealing with domestic violence.

“One day your battle will be over like mine,” survivor Nicora Dyson said. “You will have the strength and the courage to move on, that takes time. No more tears or pain. Thank God I made it.”

WRAP has been advocating for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in the Brownsville community since 1998.
