Zombies invade ballpark for domestic violence awareness
JACKSON, Tenn — Zombies took over the Jackson Generals ballpark Saturday morning.
For the fourth year in a row WRAP hosted its annual 5K in support of domestic violence awareness month, but this time around the fun run had a different theme.
One participant, Phillip Hunt said “zombie farmer is what I’m going for today.”
WRAP board members said they wanted to switch things up a bit for Halloween weekend.
Board member, Joseph Ross said “kind of came from the idea you know zombies are the popular thing right now walking deads a big thing so we thought it would be a fun event for people to come out and participate in.”
Funds raised will go back into the organization. “All of the proceeds from the run go to support WRAP’s programs for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.” Executive director, Daryl Chansuthus said.
Unlike an ordinary 5K participants had to be on the lookout for zombies throughout their quest to the finish line. Runners received 2 life flags in hopes that a zombie wouldn’t come up and snatch it off. Volunteers who didn’t have a costume had no worries because organizers were there to help.
“We bought the stuff for people who volunteered to be zombies they could come here if they weren’t sure how to zombie themselves we said we’ll help you out.” Chansuthus said.
Community members feel events like the 5K bring unity to the city.
“It’s all about giving back it’s a good cause and I’m proud to be here, honored it’s a privilege to be here to represent WRAP and give back to the community.” Hunt said.
The first one hundred people registered received free t-shirts and a goody bag to take home.
