Jackson-Madison Co. first responders team up for ‘Beyond the Badge’
JACKSON, Tenn. — First responders from eight agencies will team up to help needy people in Jackson and Madison County.
“You need food, clothing and shelter, and it’s not always that easy to come by,” Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Brad Wilbanks said.
It is called Beyond the Badge. First responders take donations including money, food and toys to give to less fortunate families they encounter on calls.
Wilbanks said they will provide short-term assistance. “We know the people that are in dire need, and I’m talking immediate need,” he said.
The Jackson Police Department, Jackson Fire Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County Fire Department, EMS, Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Tennessee Highway Patrol all will participate.
“This is a way to sort of give back to the community and not be in an enforcement or critical situation,” Jackson Police Department Lt. Byron Taylor said.
In an effort to help needy families for the Thanksgiving holiday, these agencies will host a canned food drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at both Wal-Mart locations in Jackson.
“We see the need, and we can go into the area where we see they just have people that have nothing,” Madison County Sheriff’s Office PIO Tom Mapes said.
Wilbanks said he hopes this program allows the community to get to know first responders “beyond the badge.”
“I think the world would be a better place if we all could meet under friendly circumstances,” Wilbanks said.
The group will also host a toy drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at both Wal-Mart locations in Jackson.
They also will host a toy drive and pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. the same day at the Baker’s Rack in downtown Jackson. Bring a toy to donate or give $10.
