City of Trenton unites to ‘Honor the Blue’

TRENTON, Tenn. — In the wake of another violent attack on police officers across the country, West Tennessee shows its support for its men and women in blue.

“Our main goal with doing all of this was to build a positive relationship between law enforcement and our community,” Trenton Gazette General Manager Michele Jones said.

As a thank you for their service, local pizza shops provided lunch for Trenton police and Gibson County deputies.

“We have had more food over the last six to eight months than we probably ever have,” Trenton Police Chief Will Sanders said. “You know, we are gaining five to 10 pounds a month from people feeding us, but the officers really appreciate it.”

Across the city, home and business owners have swapped their porch lights with blue bulbs in an effort to light the town blue.

“Just saw one after the other, after the other,” Trenton Police Lt. James Wilson said. “It feels really good to know that you have the support of the community and they appreciate the job that you are doing.”

With many Trenton businesses and residents supporting Honor the Blue, many say a new tradition has just begun.

“If they do it two or three years in a row, more people will get involved, more citizens will get involved and more businesses will get involved,” Chief Sanders said.

Officers have a message for their supporters.

“Thank you for letting us know that you’re behind us and that you support good law enforcement,” Lt. Wilson said.

The last day of Honor the Blue week is Friday when many Trenton businesses will have discounts for law enforcement and their families.
