Bolivar residents to vote on wine in grocery stores
BOLIVAR, Tenn. — Residents in Bolivar will decide whether they want wine sold in their grocery stores.
Mayor Barrett Stevens says, if passed, to meet zoning requirements the store must be a bona fide grocery retail establishment.
He says Maxwell’s Grocery, Save-A-Lot and Wal-Mart are the only places in Bolivar that fit the bill.
Only registered voters in Bolivar can vote on the measure.
“I do know that some of the people out in the county are a little disturbed that they don’t have an opportunity to vote on this issue,” Mayor Stevens said. “Of course, this is a city of Bolivar referendum and it only concerns people in the city of Bolivar.”
Although there is already one liquor store in Bolivar, Stevens says if it passes the competition won’t hurt the area.
