West Tennesseans gather for Veteran’s day parade
JACKSON, Tenn — For the second year in a row west Tennesseans gathered for a Veteran’s Day parade.
Organizers with the Veterans program committee say it’s a chance for the community to say thank you to those who have served our country, and salute those currently serving.
The crowd was filled with soldiers, veterans, and service members to whom we say thank you for fighting for our country’s freedom.
Robert Jones with the VFW Post 6496 of Jackson, said “it’s refreshing in particular the support of non veterans that are here to say hello and shake our hands and say thank you.”
Every veteran has their own story. Richard Swaim with the VFW Post of Jackson served during the Korean war.
“I was most excited about having my grandson back form Baghdad to do this with me.” Swaim said.
Benjamin Williams returned two weeks ago and joined the parade just to be alongside his grandfather. “Just coming home and landing in Fort Campbell was a great experience you just don’t realize how much you miss it.” Williams said.
Swaim said although he’s glad to have his grandson here, it warms his heart to know the community cares about what they do for the nation.
“It’s gratifying to see all the crowd to see the excitement we got here to see the patriotism being exhibited the way it is.” Swaim explained.
Grand Marshal of the parade, 95 year-old, Dr. Don Webb said he went into the army September of 1940 and served until December of 1945.
“I appreciate it so much when people see my hat and thank me for my service.”
What’s better than a thank you?
“I’m just glad to have been able to come home from my duty and glad that he’s been able to come home from his.” Swaim said.
Organizers said they hope to have the Veteran’s day parade in downtown Jackson next year.
