Houston County couple dead following explosion at their home

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A Houston County couple have been killed in an explosion at their home.

The Leaf-Chronicle of Clarksville reports (http://leafne.ws/2eBhmDx ) that firefighters responded to the blaze at the mobile home in Stewart on Monday night.

Houston County Emergency Management Director David Hardin says the husband was in a shop about 75 yards from the property when he heard a blast at the home. He rushed to the home to rescue his wife, but died in the attempt.

The couple were in their 70s. Their identities have not been released.

Hardin says it’s not immediately clear what caused the explosion, but said there were 10 oxygen bottles in the home that had been delivered earlier in the day.

Fire marshal and sheriff’s office officials are investigating.
