UPDATE: Suspect dead after stabbing and officer involved shooting
JACKSON, Tenn — Tense moments in west Jackson on a day America paused to give thanks.
“We don’t want to be out here on Thanksgiving, so it’s just a tough time,” Jackson Police Chief Julian Wiser said.
Thursday, the Jackson Police Department responded to a stabbing incident at Pathways Behavioral Health Services Facility located near Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
“A medical professional inside pathways was being stabbed when officers arrived it resulted in an officer involved shooting,” Wiser said.
The TBI confirmed the suspect was 45-year-old Don Fitzgerald White.
Investigators said he was being treated at the facility at the time when he stabbed a female worker several times.
Officials say during an exchange with White, the situation got heated which resulted in one of the officers firing and striking White.
Investigators said the worker, who suffered stab wounds was flown to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis. White was taken to Jackson-Madison County General, where he later died.
“I requested through the district attorney’s office that TBI come and work the officer involved shooting, so TBI is arriving on the scene, they will process the scene and will handle the scene from this point,” Chief Wiser said.
“Pathways has some of the best therapist, some of the best medical doctors in the business of behavioral health,” witness Lamont Ingram said.
Ingram partners with Pathway Services and was dropping a patient off when he said he noticed something was not quite right.
“They did not tell us anything about what happened but you could tell something was wrong because all of the lights inside of Pathways were turned off and you knew something wasn’t right,” Ingram said.
Investigators said both Pathways and Jackson-Madison General Hospital were placed on lock down while they combed the scene.
“It’s on like, a complete lock down, like no one in, no one out. If you’re here they wanted to know your reason, ‘why are you here?’, that type of situation,” Ingram said.
A Thanksgiving tragedy no one wanted to have happen.
“It’s very unfortunate that it’s Thanksgiving and we have so many families affected by a critical incident,” Chief Wiser said.
Officials said the lock down of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital has been lifted.
Interim President of West Tennessee Healthcare, James Ross released a statement saying operations at the hospital were back to normal and he also asked for prayers for the families affected.
The names of the female worker and the law enforcement officer have not been released.
