Justice audit: Memphis using $1.9M for rape kits correctly
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – An audit by the U.S. Department of Justice’s inspector general says the city of Memphis is generally using $1.9 million grant for sexual assault kits correctly.
The report says Memphis has drawn almost $378,000 of the grant as of September. Memphis has sent more than 1,000 sexual assault kits to labs for analysis.
The city’s award goals are to test previously un-submitted sexual assault kits; support and treat sexual assault survivors and ensure resources and staff are available to investigate leads and build cases; provide its police department overtime funding, equipment and training; and offer sexual assault education and prevention efforts.
The audit found that the police department’s policy for documenting overtime wasn’t followed all the time. The city said the police department is now ensuring compliance.
