1 dead after house fire near Bemis

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — One person is dead after a Monday morning fire near Bemis.

Officials have not released the victim’s name and have only said that it was a man. Family members on scene Monday afternoon said the 88-year-old man lived alone and had health problems.

The Madison County Fire Department responded around 4:15 a.m. Monday to a house fire in the 80 block of Bemis Cemetery Road, according to a release from the department.

The one-story, wood-frame home was totally involved when crews arrived. It reportedly took firefighters around 35 minutes to get the fire under control.

Officials say the fire appears to have started around a wood-burning stove. At this time, there is no indication of foul play and the fire appears to be accidental, according to the release.

Investigators believe the home was equipped with a working smoke alarm.
