Murder trial underway in fatal stabbing of Tennessee woman

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Lawyers have given opening statements in the murder trial of a man accused of fatally stabbing a stranger as she walked on a Tennessee greenway.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/2qorEfA ) the trial of 26-year-old Timothy Ison opened Monday.

Knox County Deputy District Attorney General Kyle Hixson says 42-year-old Stefany Fairbanks walked into “a true nightmare scenario” on the Knoxville greenway. Prosecutors have asked for life imprisonment without parole for Ison because of the random nature of the 2015 attack.

Ison’s attorney Susan Shipley says the case’s evidence is contaminated because the scene was “total chaos.”

Knox County Criminal Court Judge Scott Green says the trial will probably last the rest of the week and possibly into next.

Ison has been held on a $1 million bond since the day Fairbanks died.
