Madison Co. sheriff issues phone scam warning

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Sheriff John Mehr is again warning the public about scam phone calls.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has been slammed with reports of threatening phone calls that appear to be from law enforcement, according to a release from sheriff’s office spokesman Tom Mapes.

The caller will often mention the name of a judge and claim that the person has failed to appear for jury duty and will be fined or even jailed unless they make a payment, according to the release.

The sheriff urges residents to hang up and not to send money or gift cards.

Neither the courts nor the sheriff’s office make threatening or demanding phone calls, the release states.
