Gibson County deputy tased for good cause
GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Business was normal Tuesday at the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, but Monday some deputies got a big shock.
“They were gonna get tased anyway,” Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas said. “It was part of our certification training.”
Capt. Cody Childress wanted to honor his mother who died of cancer 17 years ago. He made a promise to raise over $1,000 for St. Jude, and he would get tased at the end of their Taser training course Monday.
“I got to thinking what could be worse than losing a parent at a young age, and I got to thinking, a parent losing a child,” Capt. Childress said.
Childress said he came up with the idea on Friday. Over the weekend, they raised more than $1,100.
“I wished I had come up with the idea a little bit prior, but like I said, last Friday was the anniversary of her death, so that’s when it started clicking in my mind to do something to honor her,” Capt. Childress said.
Sheriff Thomas says it gives him a sense of pride to see his deputies step up and do something like this.
“A term I use a lot is I don’t believe in mediocrity. I always believe in trying to do something just a little bit better,” Sheriff Thomas said.
Capt. Childress said the tasing lasted a full five seconds, but he felt fine Tuesday.
As of Tuesday, the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office had already raised more than $1,400 for St. Jude.
