UPDATE: JMCSS School Board member says he will not resign

JACKSON, Tenn. — Just 24 hours after his resignation, a school board member is now withdrawing his resignation from the education body.

Morris Merriweather has announced he will not resign from the Jackson-Madison County School Board.

Merriweather was elected to the school board in August. He announced Thursday he was resigning Thursday, after just three months on the job.

He told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News the reason for his initial decision to resign.

“There was a disagreement with the long range planning committee chairman, which was myself and the superintendent and a member of the planning board..commission..there was a disagreement, so that’s what spun the whole thing off,” said Merriweather, who represents District 6, Position 2 on the Jackson-Madison County School Board.

He now says he plans to stay on the board.

“There was so many members of the community from all walks of life and that was asking me, would I reconsider, would I stay because we need you… there’s a lot going on…we don’t have a voice, you’re our voice, don’t do this to us and I listened to those cries,” said Merriweather.

WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News also asked Merriweather what his next step would be if the board does not accept his decision to retract his resignation.

“(I’m) going to my attorney’s office because I think that much of the district..the children I want to represent that I want to make sure that does not happen,” said Merriweather.

There’s still no word from the board on Merriweather’s announcement to resign. The Jackson-Madison County School Board will meet next Thursday, where board members could vote to accept or reject Merriweather’s decision to retract his resignation.
