Area recycling center gets grant for new initiative

CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — Three local cities could see a change in their recycling after the West Tennessee Regional Recycling Hub receives a $179,000 grant.

“They’re sharing carts with local governments to improve efficiency, basically with the purpose of increasing the recycling in the region,” said Larry Christley, with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

The new 96-gallon recycling bins will be available to residents in Lexington, Henderson and Adamsville. The bins are free of charge to anyone who wants to get involved.
Organizers say this is all part of a new initiative that’s as easy as taking out the trash.

“They’ll bring it down to the curbside if that’s the schedule the local government has, and it will be picked up just like the garbage, but instead of going to the landfill, it will go here,” Christley said.

Organizers say you don’t even have to separate your recyclables, making it easier for residents to get in the recycling habit.

“It will make it easier for us to recycle, and the containers should improve the amount of recycling we get in,” Chester County Solid Waste Director Danny Benard said.

Lexington’s Director of Public Works Robbie McCready says they hope to increase recycling.

“Currently the city of Lexington recycles about 41 tons a month. This is going to increase that, obviously, by a few tons. (We’re) hoping to get about 100 tons a month,” McCready said.
