Organization holds special luncheon for cancer survivors

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. -One organization is holding a special luncheon for those who have survived cancer. Cancer survivors, caregivers along with the American Cancer Society gathered at the Boys and Girls club of Brownsville. All the cancer survivors from Haywood County were invited to the Relay for Life Survivor Luncheon to celebrate their journey and their battle against cancer.

“People don’t realize how hard fighting cancer is on the survivor and the caregiver,” said Megan Greene with the American Cancer Society Jackson Office.

Some survivors share their journey. Robin’s son, Matthew is a cancer survivor.

“He was 4 and a half he was diagnosed with Leukemia but with his type of cancer he had a mass covering 85 percent of his chest when he was diagnosed,” said Robin.

His mother says the treatment has gone well for Matthew.

“Has all his hair back,” said Robin. “At the beginning, it was really rough he had to be sedated and on a ventilator for about a week.”

“Breast cancer in 2010,” said survivor Paulette. “It was kind of scary at first. They looked at the x-ray and they saw something and she said well we are going to send you to a surgeon.”

Paulette says although the journey was difficult she was able to get through it.

“I went through it very well. I thought I was going to break down but I didn’t,” said Paulette. “I was blessed, I was truly blessed. The lord blessed me with good doctors.”
