Weakley Co. Sheriff’s Office warns of scam that cost resident $7,000

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after a phone scam reportedly cost someone $7,000.

A Weakley County resident reportedly sent $7,000 in cash through the mail due to a scam phone call, according to a news release from the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller reportedly told the resident they would be arrested for allowing their Social Security number to be used to launder drug money in Texas, the release says.

The victim thought the money was going to the Social Security Administration.

Investigators served a search warrant on both the UPS and post office in an attempt to stop the letter from being delivered. It had already been delivered before the incident was reported to the sheriff’s office.

The Social Security Administration, the IRS and all other government agencies do not call people on the phone, but will send a letter instead, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office says residents should report any callers who say you will be arrested for not sending money.
