Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Rachel Barber

YORKVILLE, Tenn. — This week’s Educator of the Week, presented by the Tennessee Education Lottery, is Rachel Barber.

Barber teaches seventh and eighth grade math at Yorkville Elementary. She splits her time teaching at Springhill Elementary school as well.

In total, she has taught for eight years in the same area and school she grew up in.

“It’s been amazing. I could not ask for a better group of students, better community to serve,” Barber said.

The community support for Barber is big. She even graces the front of the school’s Facebook page. The support has been especially important after Barber’s recent cancer diagnosis late last year.

“From one mass it went to stage four Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which was a shock for me,” said Barber. “It happened and it was scary, but I have a supportive family and friends and good doctors and community and it has made that very bearable.”

Barber will now be eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award. To vote for her or any of the other nominees, visit their website.
