Data shows learning loss due to pandemic, teachers hope to reverse trend
JACKSON, Tenn. — In a Wednesday press conference, Governor Bill Lee and Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn discussed what students in Tennessee are facing, due to COVID-19’s impacts on school systems.

“We are estimating a 50% decrease in proficiency in third grade reading, and we are projecting a 65% decrease in proficiency in third grade math,” Schwinn said.
Some of the numbers are projections — but others are based on early results from testing.
“We knew this was coming,” Governor Lee said. “We didn’t know the extent to which it was coming. But now we have some data.”
Union University Professor Mandy Cates says learning loss is typically seen over the summer break, but can refer to any situation where children have been absent from the classroom for a long time.
COVID has multiplied that gap.
“Teachers are working harder than ever before to make sure they are meeting the educational needs of their students,” Cates said.
The numbers are certainly frightening, but Cates warned against apathy. There are still plenty of things parents can do to reverse the trend.
“Many schools are offering before and after school programs, and these programs typically offer tutoring, homework help, enrichment instruction,” Cates said.
One of the biggest is reading, since the benefits can be found in other subjects like math and science.

“Research has shown that even 20 minutes of reading per day can dramatically increase vocabulary acquisition, and of course, gives great practice for reading comprehension,” Cates said.
Cates says that there’s no definitive answer about how long will it take to repair some of the damage, and it is essential to keep track of your own child and see where they are struggling.
“Every learner is different,” Cates said. “With that difference in mind, it can take varying lengths of time.”
Cates also recommends keeping an open line of communication between your child and their teacher.
Governor Lee mentioned they are formulating a strategy to help the situation, with plans to be announced soon.
