Man charged in shooting of Tennessee sheriff’s deputy

BLUFF CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been charged with attempting to kill a Tennessee sheriff’s deputy.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says 54-year-old Alan Coulter has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment and weapons offenses following Friday’s shooting in Sullivan County.

Authorities said deputies attempted a traffic stop about 1 a.m. Friday because the driver had outstanding arrest warrants.

The TBI says Coulter stopped driving and ran into an outbuilding before shooting the deputy once through the door.

The deputy was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The bureau said Coulter barricaded himself inside the building for hours before he was arrested.
