Man rescued near bridge along Old Medina Road
MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — On Tuesday morning a man was rescued from a sandbar on a local river.
Around 6 a.m., the Madison County Fire Department received a call from a man stuck under a bridge on Old Medina Road.
“It was actually the injured party that was calling. Said that he was below the railroad truss off of Old Medina Road there near Barnette Road, and he was injured and needed help,” said Madison County Fire Chief Eric Turner.
The man, who made the call himself, was on a walk yesterday afternoon when he fell and injured his leg.
“I actually think he was in the river in the water and got swept down due to the current and hurt his leg and was able to crawl through a sandbar there under the bridge,” Turner said.
When the fire department showed up, the man was on a sandbar next to the river.
Turner says he’s unaware of how he got there, but it only took firefighters 30 to 35 minutes to rescue him.
“Firefighters had to ladder down off the bridge and make contact with him, and realized with their help he was able to walk out with a firefighter on both sides and assist him getting out,” Turner said.
The man has no known critical injuries at this time. But firefighters wanted to make sure he was warm.
“Our biggest concern with him was the cold and him being out in it. If he had been there all night like he said he was, that was our biggest concern was his exposure to the cold,” Turner said.
After being rescued, he was transported by local EMS to the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
There are no further updates on his conditions.
