Suspect dies in officer-involved shooting in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirms an officer-involved shooting in Madison County.

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, deputies with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office attempted to make a traffic stop near mile marker 89 on Interstate 40.

Initial reports state the driver failed to stop and led authorities on a pursuit along nearby roads for around 30 minutes.

The release states the driver eventually attempted to enter back onto I-40 from Law Road, when an individual exited the vehicle and began running across the interstate.

Preliminary information indicates that during the foot chase, a deputy deployed a taser at the individual on the westbound ramp at Exit 93.

The encounter is believed to have escalated, resulting in the individual firing a handgun at deputies.

TBI says four deputies returned fire and struck the individual, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual in the vehicle was taken into custody.

According to TBI, no officers were injured during the incident.

TBI agents are working to gather evidence and conduct interviews to determine the series of events that led to the shooting.
