32-year-old Tennessee man attacked, killed by family’s dog

BENTON, Tenn. (AP) — A man in Tennessee was attacked and killed by a dog owned by his family, a sheriff said.

Polk County deputies responded Saturday to a home after a report that a dog attacked Rusty Shane Burris, 32, Polk County Sheriff Steve Ross told WTVC-TV.

“The dog had been aggressive before, and it was on the cable, but at some point during the night it broke the cable and came after Mr. Burris,” Ross said.

Burris suffered severe injuries to his arms while trying to defend himself and fell unconscious, the sheriff said. First responders couldn’t find a pulse and said he had died from the injuries.

The dog, which had been secured in a vehicle before deputies arrived, was euthanized at the scene with consent from the owners, Ross said.
