Dyersburg police report three shootings, multiple arrests
DYERSBURG, Tenn. — The Dyersburg Police Department says there were three shootings, multiple arrests, and over five weapons seized on Saturday.
The first of the shootings was around 7 p.m. on Moody Drive, when officers were sent out over a report of shots fired.
The officers were given a description of a vehicle, which was later pulled over in the Lake Road and Tucker Street area.
The department reports that a 15-year-old, a 17-year-old, and an 18-year-old named Titus Johnson were in the vehicle.
Dyersburg police say that Johnson had a loaded handgun in his waistband. Police also found over 34 grams of suspected marijuana, including over 20 bags individually wrapped for distribution, and another handgun in the vehicle.
The three have been charged with possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, felony reckless endangerment, and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
A little over two hours later, officers headed to the Forrest Street area after an officer on patrol heard gunshots.
Once there, an officer saw a vehicle speeding out of the area. It was pursued and eventually lost control at the US 51 Bypass near Pioneer Road.
The department says that there were five people in the car, with one being captured after fleeing on foot, and three others being found after a search of the area.
Inside the vehicle, officers found an AR-style rifle in the passenger seat, a .45 caliber handgun and AR-style rifle on the ground beside the car, and multiple shell casings inside the vehicle from various caliber guns.
Officers were able to locate the scene of the shooting at Rucker and Finley Street, where shell casings were found. They say there was property damage and no injuries.
Jalen Currie, 21, Dyersburg, Jordan Currie, 19, Dyersburg, Devontae Wiggins, 18, Dyersburg, and a 17-year-old Dyersburg teen were all charged each with two counts of felony reckless endangerment, felony evading arrest, possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and misdemeanor evading arrest.
And while officers were still on the scene of the Rucker and Finley Street shooting, they heard gunshots come from the area north of Forrest Street around 11 p.m.
Officers found that two cars had crashed on Tucker and Mason Street. The department says both of the vehicles were disabled, and that they had hit and brought down an electric pole.
Officers found bullets in the car, two handguns, and shell casings in roadway and car. One of the car’s drivers was found nearby and identified as Pierre Whitelow, 21, of Halls.
Whitelow has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell/deliver, and leaving the scene of an accident after finding over 154 grams of suspected marijuana.
Dyersburg Police Chief Steve Isbell stated:
“The Moody Drive shooting incident was quickly resolved with three arrests due to the result of cooperation without delay from those involved, and the good work from an observant officer who located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Our investigation has determined that the victim’s residence was the intended target. The Tucker Street crash and shooting incident remains under investigation; however, evidence suggest that the occupants involved were in a high-speed chase with each other while the shooting was in progress. The arrests of the four individuals involved in the police pursuit was the result of outstanding police work by an observant officer and the quick response from other officers to safely apprehend the four individuals. Our officers were challenged with answering calls for service, and processing multiple crime scenes. I am proud of their efforts and hard work. The DPD called in additional personnel to assist. I would like to thank the Dyer County Sheriff’s Department and the West Tennessee Drug Task Force for their assistance throughout the night providing support and personnel.”
The Dyersburg Police Department says that anyone with information on the three shootings should call Crime Stoppers at (731) 285-TIPS, or their department at (731) 288-7679.
