Mock disaster puts students side-by-side with first responders

JACKSON, Tenn. — Senior nursing students at Jackson State Community College had the chance to go through a mock disaster.

The nursing students learned how to perform medical care in various environments and situations alongside local emergency agencies.

This year’s theme was an active shooting scenario that took place at the softball field. Cassie Revelle, an associate professor of nursing, at Jackson State explained the importance of being prepared in this type of situation.

“We always have to prepare for those. Sadly enough, it is a real issue in today. Not long ago, we had the shooting at the school in Nashville. So we train and prepare so if it happens to us, we are ready,” Revelle said.

Some of the emergency responders who participated in the mock drill included the Jackson Police Department, JPD SWAT team, Air Evac, Madison County Fire Department, and other agencies.
