Top Ladies of Distinction to celebrate local beginnings in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Top Ladies of Distinction are preparing to celebrate a historic chartering in the Hub City.

According to a press release, noted Associate Professor of Education at Lane College, Edna Mitchell Cawthorn, established the organization’s Jackson chapter in 1967, which was the first chapter chartered outside of its birthplace in Tyler, Texas.

This weekend will bring two events commemorating the organization’s local beginnings.

A remembrance event will be held in the Kirkendoll Center at Lane College at 7 p.m. on September 8, followed by a bench unveiling and memorial wreath placement at Shirlene Mercer Park, at 11 a.m. on September 9.

“We will recognize and give honor to our organizer, Edna Cawthorn, and we will also recognize our living charter members,” said event chairperson Margaret Rogers.

“I just got excited when [we started] going back down memory lane, because a lot of us know these ladies and the impact they had on our lives, while either we were growing up or while we were attending Lane College,” said Pamela Springfield, Chapter President, Top Ladies of Jackson TN.

A press release states the Top Ladies of Distinction is a national organization focused on humanitarian and civic service. Click here to learn more.
