Firefighters aim to start new tradition with 9/11 memorial walk

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. – The City of Humboldt held a memorial walk for the first time to honor those who fell on September 11, now 22 years ago.

The Humboldt Fire Department, accompanied by the Trenton Fire Department, held a walk in the park Monday evening in Humboldt at Bailey Park.

“This evening we are doing a 3.43 mile walk as we don’t have very many tall buildings here in the City of Humboldt. So we’re going to keep it nice and easy for our guys and just a walk here around the park,” said Lt. Lucas Reasons, with the Humboldt Fire Department.

This 3.43 mile walk represents the 343 firefighters who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

“9/11 happened when I was in first grade, and I didn’t really know much about it. I got this job in 2015 and when I went to academy that’s when it really hit me and what it meant to all those guys. So I want to carry on this tradition for the older guys who have been doing this job a lot longer than me,” said Capt. Alexander Trudo, with the Humboldt Fire Department.

Captain Trudo says 9/11 is significant to him and important to honor as a first responder.

“It means making that sacrifice whenever necessary. It means going in doing whatever is necessary when the moment calls. We like to sit around and we like to makes jokes all day, but when that tone goes off, we’re all business, ready to go in, do what we have to, get out,” Trudo said.

This memorial walk is the first of its own for the City of Humboldt and they hope to keep this as a tradition for the years to come.
