Meeting held to discuss legal action regarding charter school in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Board of Education for Jackson-Madison County School System met Monday morning to discuss the decision made to approve a charter school in Jackson.

JMCSS officials were disappointed with the news knowing that a charter school will be added to the school system after their hard work to keep it out of the district.

“This has been a long, frustrating process. We were crystal clear and very deliberate and following the state’s guidelines and rules during the entire process. And so we stand behind our decision,” said James Johnson, the Chairman of the school board.

Members of the Jackson community that has supported JMCSS were able to stand united with the board on their next step moving forward.

“I want to thank all of the elected officials, educators, business people, minsters, pastors and any individuals that have supported us and our decision,” Johnson said.

JMCSS has decided to take legal action because the initial application from ACA was an identical application for another county.

The school board also believes the Tennessee Public Charter Commission was unjust in the decision.

“For these reasons, the Board of Education has authorized attorneys to investigate and what potential legal remedies the board has in addressing the commission’s inconsistencies and procedural errors. We will do just that and pursue whatever legal recourse is available to address these concerns,” said Dale Thomas, the board attorney for JMCSS.
