Faculty member, students charged after drugs found at West TN school

SOMERVILLE, Tenn. — Multiple students and a faculty member are facing charges after drugs were found at a local school.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, officers conducted an exterior and interior search on the grounds of Fayette-Ware High School along with K9 units.

Following the search, the Sheriff’s Office confirms one juvenile student and one adult student were each cited for a simple possession of Schedule VI on school property.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, faculty member Jireh Washington was cited for simple possession of Schedule VI on school property, and violation of a Drug Free School Zone. A press release states a 9mm handgun was also located in Washington’s vehicle.

The operation was a joint effort by officers with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, 25th Judicial Drug Task Force, West Tennessee Drug Task Force and the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.

A press release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office states they have recently worked to reinstate its School Resource Officer program as well as provided instructor training to officers for the D.A.R.E. program.
