Kirkin’ of the Tartans service returns to a local church
The First Presbyterian Church hosted their annual Kirkin’ of the Tartans at 9:30 this morning.
This movement began in 1517 after Reverend Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg.
This is a tradition that celebrates the Scottish heritage of the church.
This worship service included members bringing tartans and laying them on the altar.
Most of the music today came from, or is in some way related to, the reformation and Celtic tradition.
“We also remember those who have gone before us in other traditions and claimed that Jesus Christ is Lord,” said Pastor John White.
“The family members, church members of this day, they’ll present their proud heritage knowing that there is no religious persecution for it,” said Donnie Culver, City of Memphis Pipe Band.
A moment of silence, following prayer, was given to the heroes before them that served in the ministry.
