Conference held to inspire change, encourage action

JACKSON, Tenn. – The ALICE conference was Thursday at the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education center.

ALICE households are defined as asset limited, income constrained, employed individuals who are earning above the federal poverty level, yet struggling to afford basic expenses.

The conference took a closer look at the ALICE community and how to best serve them.

United Way of West Tennessee and the Tennessee Commission of Children & Youth partnered together to host it.

There were discussions, a mayors panel, and an employers panel.

“The goal is to educate and inspire but ultimately to help get people to shape new policy that’s going to benefit families and benefit children in particular,” said United Way of West Tennessee President and CEO Matt Marshall.

“Everything discussed today affects the lives of children and families in West Tennessee. So anything to improve that is what we’re here for,” said Jerri Moore, the Southwest Regional Coordinator for the Tennessee Commission on Children & Youth.

From school board meetings to city council meetings, attendees expressed the desire to see change take place because we all have a part to play in helping our community.
