Sheriff’s office releases update on death investigation

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office has release an update on the investigation into the death of Dana Davis:

On October 15th, 2023, Ms. Dana Davis was reported missing from her residence in the 600 Block of Cobb Crossing, by her mother. For over two weeks, an extensive search was conducted by multiple agencies utilizing many resources that included, the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, the HCSO Drone and FLIR thermal equipment, Area and Local EMA/Rescue Search Teams, Jackson Police Aviation Unit utilizing their FLIR thermal equipment, Tennessee Wildlife agents (search of nearby river), State of Tennessee Department of Corrections Canine Unit, concerned citizens and family. Phone pings indicated her phone was within a 5 mile radius of her home, however, neither Ms. Davis or her phone were located during the search.

On November 1st, local farmers harvesting a soybean crop three tenths of a mile from Ms. Davis’ residence found her body in an open soybean field. The local coroner’s office made the scene and collected her body and sent it to the Forensic Center in Memphis. An autopsy will hopefully determine the date, cause and manner of her death. Investigators believe her body was not in the same location during the searching efforts.

Subpoenas were issued for her cell phone records to Verizon and AT&T. The results have been received and reveals that Ms. Davis only spoke with two people prior to her being reported missing. Those two people were her mother and former boyfriend. There were many calls received immediately after her reported disappearance, including searchers, family and friends, that went unanswered. A GPS cell phone search warrant has been issued, but results have not been received. This may help provide additional information or leads useful to this investigation.

The Sheriff’s office has two persons of interest, one of which has already given a statement, in this investigation. We are awaiting the autopsy results to continue further with the investigation. We will involve additional law enforcement resources from the TBI to assist.
This case is now a death investigation.
