Students help bring new mural to West Tennessee

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. – A new mural is bringing color to West Tennessee, and it was our area’s very own students who helped bring it to life.

Thanks to a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, Humboldt High School students came together to build a mural that empowers every student to become a productive member of their city.

This project will encourage positive youth development through the arts.

Approximately 100 students enrolled in art at the school and will have preparation skills for their future careers.

Hamilton Glass, a nationally known mural artist, appreciated the opportunity to work directly with the students, taking a piece of each child’s opinions to create a work of art.

“This mural really is about the students that I worked with. Being asked to come to Humboldt, collaborate with students and represent them and their country is really what this is about,” Glass said.

Glass and the students started to work on the mural Sunday evening and it took about four days to complete.

For four weeks, students were on a personal Zoom call with Glass to design this project for their hometown.

Murals require little to no maintenance and last 20 to 30 years.

The students are excited that diversity is becoming more as they move forward together.

One young designer stated that he was so proud of the finished outcome and excited for it to be viewed.

“It represents me and not just me, but my family and my community, mostly our Strawberry Festival and how it brings us together and better. It’s the one thing that just shows community to me,” said Jaydon Lewis, a 12th grader and designer.

The mural can be viewed on the corner of 14th Street and Main.
