Veterans honored by students for Veterans Day
JACKSON, Tenn. – One local school educated students by celebrating those who fought and are still fighting in our Armed Forces.
President Abraham Lincoln once said, “Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere who bravely bears his country’s cause.”
And that’s just what students did Friday at Jackson Christian School, honoring those who fought in our Armed Forces with an annual drive through parade.
“I just think it’s important that we recognize the people that were willing to put their name and their life on the line for our country,” said Fran Baker, a high school teacher and veteran.
The parade took off with the choir singing the national anthem at the flagpole.
High school history teacher and veteran herself is proud to teach her students what Veterans Day means.
“Only one percent of Americans have ever served in the military, and today is our opportunity to honor those people and to give our students the opportunity to see how much their freedoms have cost,” Baker said.
Students held up hand-made signs, ribbons and flags to pay respect to the veterans who drove by and waved.
Ty Smith, a senior, comes from a military family. His father is a Marine, so this parade is important not only to him but also to his family.
“I’d like to say, personally, thank you for your service to everybody. I know that it means a lot to me and it means a lot to my family. I’m sure it means a lot to everyone here and we’d just like to show you our gratitude,” Smith said.
The students also had handwritten thank you notes and gave gifts to the veterans as they drove through the parade.
