Campaign brings awareness to fire risk from lithium-ion batteries

JACKSON, Tenn. — Tech gifts are in demand for the holidays, but what many people don’t know is that some new technology also comes with the risk of fire from lithium-ion batteries.

These are the batteries that power mobile phones, laptops, vehicles and more.

The Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has a new Take C.H.A.R.G.E campaign to helps us be prepared.

“C” stands for certified, so purchasing products that meet safety standards.

“H” is for handle with care, so following all manufacturer’s instructions.

“A” stands for always stay alert, so checking for damage, like swelling or overheating.

“R” is for recycle, so disposing of batteries at battery recycling centers.

“G” is for get out, so having a fire escape plan.

“These fires are on the rise,” said Jennifer Williams, Senior Research Application Specialist, FSRI. “We’re seeing them take place around the country just about every day, causing injuries and fatalities, and our research shows that a fire involving these devices can lead you with a minute or less to escape.”

Lastly, “E” stands for educate, so letting others know about the need to Take C.H.A.R.G.E of battery safety.
